Zakāt al-Fiṭr is an obligatory contribution of the month of Ramadan, which aims to express the focus on social aspects during this month. It has to be paid towards the end of the month and at the latest until the festive prayer the following day.
This contribution has to be aimed towards people in need. However, as most people prefer to send their money to countries where poverty is more widespread, the payment can also be done throughout the months, so the charity organizations receive the money early on and can distribute the goods in time.
The amount, which has to be contributed, is one daily ration of food per family member and should be delivered by the head of the family. The Zakāt al-Fiṭr can be submitted in the form of monetary contributions to charity organizations, if they use the money to buy and distribute food. The direct payment of money to needy people is not sufficient.
