By equipping human hearts with empathy and generosity, Allāh, the merciful, provides the tools for humanity to lead them to mutual support. Regarding the support of people in need, there is particular emphasis in the Qurʾān on orphan children. Not many orphans have the necessary social surrounding that takes care of them. Therefore it is very important, that they are not left to themselves but receive emotional and monetary support of the society and their environment.
In the holy Qurʾān it says:
„And they ask you about orphans. Say, Improvement for them is best.“
(Sūrah al-Baqarah, Vers 220)
On the other hand, we are also being warned treat them unjust or to illegitimately infringe upon their inheritance:
„Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze.“
(Sūrah al-Nisāʾ, Vers 10)
Those who look after them though enjoy higher ranking by Allāh and in paradise, he will enjoy the nearness of our beloved prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is passed down in the following tradition, where Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
„Me and someone who administers to and orphan child, whether they are related or not, we will be like index finger and middle finger in paradise.“
This means that those who look after an orphan, care for them and support them, will be as close to the Prophet in paradise as one finger to another in a hand.
